Your journey to optimized diabetes management and better health begins with setting a S-M-A-R-T goal: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-oriented. You want the “right” goal, but you’ll also want to “write” your goal.
The truth is, a goal that exists only in your mind is not as effective as a goal that is written down. This is one of the Means for achieving your goal: write it and post it where you will see it.
The adage is true that we learn better what we write and read and say and hear. A goal in your mind tends to become diffused and generalized over time. A goal that is written down and posted where it will be seen is reinforced and remembered. So after setting your goal, as the first of your means, write it down. Go ahead and do that now. List three important reasons WHY you want to achieve your goal and write those down as well. (You don’t remember them? That’s why they must be written down!)
Pin up a poster of your goal. Paste or draw pictures, clippings, photos and other artistic decorations onto your poster to make your goal special and memorable. Make smaller signs or notices and post them where they will be seen regularly. On the refrigerator door or next to the bathroom scale, for instance. When you see them, say them aloud. Reinforce your goal and your determination to achieve it. This helps maintain the right attitude to persevere every day.
Establish the “right/write” mind-set for your Specific goal, and you will have begun the journey on the “right” foot.
