BMI of 25
One of the most important pieces of information about your health is your Body Mass Index, or BMI.
Your BMI is not only an indication of your weight, but works in tandem with other health risk factors such as hypertension and cholesterol levels. Together these factors are called the metabolic syndrome — an indication of high risk for diabetes, heart disease, and other serious health conditions.
Perhaps the most important thing about the Body Mass Index, however, is that it is reversible. If you achieve and maintain a BMI at or below 25, the other factors of the metabolic syndrome and the risks of a serious health condition are lessened considerably.
If you are a type 2 diabetic, the BMI is also a plain measure of your success (or not) in your battle with insulin resistance. A lower BMI means less insulin resistance. Less insulin resistance means a healthier and longer life.
For these reasons, I recommend a BMI of 25 or less as a targeted goal for everyone — especially for type 2 diabetics.
Use the chart above to find your BMI range. Please note that this chart is meant as a measure for adults, not children. Find your height on the left hand side of the chart. Slide your finger to the right until it intersects with your weight in pounds. The chart is designed to show you whether you are in the healthy weight range, overweight, or obese.
